Printing
What is Giclée printing?
A Giclée is a very high-resolution ink-jet print onto an acid and bleach free, 100% cotton archival paper.
The highest quality light-fast, UV stable inks are used.
Giclée derived from a blend of French words; gicleur, which is a technical term for a nozzle or jet, and gicler, to spray out.
The term Giclée — pronounced gee-klay — was initially coined by printmaker Jack Duganne in 1991. Today, it's used to describe fine art printing using pigment based, archival quality inks, manufactured on advanced inkjet printers.
What's the main difference between Giclée and other print technologies?
Whereas many traditional print technologies — such as lithography — use the classic CMYK 4-colour combination, Giclée printers use up to 12 individual colours. This gives much smoother gradient transitions and a wider colour gamut. In other words, more depth and richness to the final print, which helps to create stunning vibrant artwork with amazing reproduction.
We use a Epson SureColour P9500v and which can print on media up to 118 cm (44”) wide format inkjet and uses 12 different ink colours. We have another Epson SureColour P9000v which can print on media up to 118 cm (44”) wide format inkjet and uses 11 different ink colours. We also use a Cannon Pro 6000s 8 colour graphics wide format inkjet, this printer can print on media up to 152cm (60”) wide.
All printers have high resolution reproduction and a large colour gamut, using pigment based inks that have a much longer lifespan than the normal dye inks you find in desktop inkjets.
What is the lifespan of a Giclée print?
The life of a print is affected by many factors including exposure to UV and other light waves, air pollution, humidity, air circulation and the media used. It is recommended that prints are framed under glass for longevity. The pigment-based inks we use will not fade for at least 75 years when printed on inkjet coated paper, so if kept in suitable conditions there is almost no limit as to how long they could last.

Paper
Prints can be produced onto a range of different media.
We stock six different Wide Format Inkjet papers, please see below.
These papers are specially coated for photographic quality and archival fine art printing onto paper and are selected for their print finish, colour reproduction and good value for money.
The media we keep in stock comes on a roll, prints can be made up to 5 metres long.
We can group smaller images together to fill the print area, for example: 6 x A4 images will fit on to a 106cm x 50cm roll. We also have A2 and A1sheet media in Matt 170gsm for double sided prints.

Can we print on different paper stock?
We can print onto papers that you may wish to supply yourself, providing they are suitable.
The Art Shop here at Bower Ashton stock a wide range of papers, most are supplied in large sheet sizes. If you would like to use your own paper please make sure it’s no thinner than 70 gsm and no heavier than around 400 gsm.
It is worth noting that the colour reproduction will be compromised on your own paper due to it being uncoated, therefore it is always worth doing a test print before committing to the final print.
We have a materials library of printed examples on the papers supplied in the Art Shop, they can be found both here in Digital Print and in the Art Shop, please ask a member of staff if you would like to look at them and we can advise.
Notes
If we print onto your own uncoated paper, colour and vibrancy may be compromised.
It is always worth doing a test print first!
We cannot print on Newsprint, it is too thin to go through our printers and will ruin the print heads!
An alternative is sugar paper as it has a similar look to Newsprint.
If you require Newsprint there is a company called The Newspaper Club where you can order zines online.
