Transparencies
Acetates / Positives for Screen print - Textiles print - Lithography - Photo Etching - Embossing & Debossing - Backlit Film for light boxes
Transparencies are mainly used for making silk screens, the image is printed with solid black ink onto the film which is then used to expose onto a screen. We print transparencies using the Inkjet Wide Format printer and our own supply of film (sometimes transparencies are also called Positives or Acetate). We can also print colour images onto this acetate.
The maximum width of this film is 90cm (max print size 88cm) and it comes on a roll so it can print as long as you need in length. Please take into consideration the maximum silkscreen sizes (see below).
Talk to a technical member of staff in the given area (Screen print / Textiles print / Litho) before printing any transparencies to check availability and advice as each area have different requirements.
For Transparencies that are A3 size or smaller, there are Pharos Laser printers available in the Digital Design Studios DDS (see below).

Colour Separations
Spot Colours
We print solid black ink for spot colour separations, if you need a gradient or grey tones you can create a dot in Photoshop by converting the image to a Bitmap and using diffusion dither or halftone screen.
CMYK Separations
We have new image setting software (Filmmaker 10+) for making CMYK separations and precision half toning on our Epson SC pro 9000s printer, for positives that are over A3 size and are too big to be printed on a Laser printer.
Spot colour precision halftone separations can also be printed with this software.
A3 or smaller size
Pharos Laser printers are available in the Digital Design Studios DDS (Yellow room 0F11, F Block) for printing positives up to A3 size. The printers are pre-loaded with Folex or clear Acetate and use the Pharos system for payments. These Laser printers are also great for printing colour separations and can be printed with different halftone sizes via inDesign. There is a DDS guide for printing transparencies in Useful Links at the bottom of this page.

A4\A3 Folex: files need to be saved as a flattened Jpeg 150-300 ppi resolution and Greyscale colour mode. Folex can be purchased in the Art Shop.
Textiles silkscreens have a bigger mesh count which allows more ink to pass through.
Therefore any grey areas will not come out on the screen after it has been exposed.
Images have to be high contrast black & white.
You can create the illusion of grey by breaking up black areas with various mark making techniques such as cross hatching, different sizes of black lines and dots. If you need to darken your image this can be done in Photoshop using Levels or Brightness/Contrast.
Lithograph
Wide Format Inkjet: up to 60x65cm maximum: see above
A4\A3 Folex: see above
Lithographic transparencies can be printed with varoius halftones and dot sizes.
Photo Etching
Maximum A4 Folex: see above
Photo Etching does not need any halftone.
